Geology 422/522 Planetary Geology for Teachers
EXAM #1 - Study Guide
The first exam will have a series of short answer questions followed
by several discussion questions. Short answers in the first section can
be answered in the space provided using short phrases or sentences. Your
long answers in the discussion section should explain concepts in complete
sentences, and if you need more space you can use the back sides of the
exam. Most importantly, read each question carefully and write down something.
Partial credit is possible.
Read your notes and focus on concepts we covered in class.
Review the following concepts in detail:
- the accepted absolute age of the solar system, and how it is known
- definitions of key words within and at the end of each module (may
be part of a question)
- nucleosynthesis and the creation of elements in the universe
- fusion inside a star - what elements are formed
- supernovae and the formation of heavier elements
- nebula condensation and solar system accretion
- solar nebula temperature gradient, control on planetary composition
- overall differences between terrestrial and gaseous planets, chemistry
and rock types
- difference between internal and external planetary processes: what,
where, why?
- the silicate tetrahedron and important silicate minerals
- major rock types on Earth and the Moon: what, where, why?
- major rock types on each of the terrestrial planets
- chemical weathering and physical weathering: what, where, why?
- geologic processes, types of faults, plate tectonics, surface changes,
etc.
- impact craters, simple and complex, and their importance in planetary
evolution
- important events in early planetary formation and differentiation
- formation of the Moon, and the major geologic provinces
- the significance of chondritic meteorites in Solar System formation
- meteorite classification
- planetary differentiation processes and the formation of lithosphere,
asthenosphere and core
- major constituents (rock, ice, etc.) of planets and moons
NOTE: There will be a BONUS QUESTION, probably taken from the readings
in the book, but not necessarily something we discussed in class.
