Metamorphic Processes of the Impact Event

An incredible amount of heat and pressure is applied to Earth's surface during a bolide impact. So much so that metamorphic structures form and are left behind as evidence for an impact. One metamorphic structure that can form is shocked quartz. Shocked quartz is a form of quartz whose crystalline structure deformed along planes in the crystal when put under intense heat and pressure. These planar deformation features show up as lines through the quartz mineral under a microscope. Because shocked quartz is only known to form in association with atomic bombs and bolide impacts, its presence has become a primary line of evidence supporting bolide impacts, as is the case with the Alamo Impact Event.
